I painted the fascia with a charcoal gray semi-gloss paint.  I wanted to create the look of the layout being separated from the room, without the stark transition of a hard black.  While the paint was still wet, I painted a 1 inch wide stripe of light gray paint along the top edge, and the quickly brushed it downward into the dark paint, to create a gradient from light-to-dark from top-to-bottom.
